Health Data Warehouse Project: Colon Cancer Care Evaluation

Dr. Marcy Winget (Alberta Health Services)

Dr. Yutaka Yasui (Public Health Sciences)

Dr. Osmar Zaiane (Computer Science)

  1. How do we assess the quality, timeliness, accessibility, and cost of the healthcare system in Alberta?

Data are collected, stored, and managed by multiple data holders.

It is not easy to collect and analyze data from multiple sources because they were not collected for the same reason, there are different rules governing data release, and data structures/formats are inconsistent.

Answering relevant health care policy questions is, therefore time-consuming and resource intensive.

  1. The Health Data Warehouse shown here improves this situation by enabling fast, efficient, and accurate analysis and evaluation of health care system/programs

  1. AICML is partnering with AHS focusing on a mini data warehouse on colon cancer care in Alberta. Many kinds of data have been collected and placed in one “mini data warehouse” in Medical Affairs & Community Oncology of AHS Cancer Care (Dr. Marcy Winget).

  1. This mini data warehouse has been utilized for evaluating the care for stage-III colon cancer patients in Alberta. We discovered:

      • Only 50% of the patients received guideline-recommended care

      • 20% did not receive the guideline-recommended care because they had no consultation with an oncologist: these patients were more likely to be from lowest income regions, outside of Edmonton, aged 70 years or older, and have co-morbidities.

      • 30% did not receive the guideline-recommended care, even after an oncologist consultation: these patients were more likely to be aged 70 years or older and have co-morbidities.

  1. The mini data warehouse project demonstrates the importance and utility of having a health data warehouse in Alberta for comprehensive, fast, accurate assessment of the health care system in the province.
